St Thomas Hospital has evolved into one of the region’s leading centers for Maxillofacial and Cosmetic Surgery
The shift towards becoming a center for surgical excellence was driven by the hospital’s Director and Superintendent, Dr. Charlie Cherian, and an MD in Anesthesiology who understandably had a special interest in surgery.

Capt. Dr. Somanathan Nair, (Chief General Surgeon), Dr. Mathew PC., (Chief Maxillofacial Surgeon) Dr. Daniel (Visiting Surgeon from Germany) and Mr. Johnson (OT Technician)
Encouraged by his father and inspired by his grandfather before him. Dr. Cherian was ably supported in this major shift by the hospital’s HOD for General Surgery Capt. Dr. Somanathan Nair and Dr. P. C. Mathew, for Maxillo-facial Surgery.
Together the Management of the hospital began to encourage and share expertise with visiting surgeons, especially the eminent Dr. Hermann Sailer, Founder of Cleft Children International in Switzerland.
Today in addition to state of the art surgeries for complex Cleft Lip/ Cleft Palate cases, the hospital provides a range of surgical solutions that address congenital and facial deformities as well as tumours. Some of the procedures that the hospital is qualified to provide include
